Speech Pathology

The OPH Speech Pathology Service accepts referrals from doctors, other health professionals, educators and parents/guardians as well as self referral (NB: an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist review is required prior to voice assessment). Referrals should be directed to the Coordinator - Speech Pathology Services.

Clinical Services

OPH Speech Pathology provides services to people with speech, language and/or swallowing difficulties who meet the eligibility criteria of the required program. Two of the main criteria are: the person/child lives in the specified catchment and, the person/child is not eligible for another government funded speech pathology service.

There are three (3) outpatient Speech Pathology programs available:

  • Developmental Communication Disorders
  • Adolescent - Adult stuttering disorders
  • Adult acquired disorders .

Note: An inpatient service is also available to OPH inpatients.

The developmental communication disorders program includes:

  • 0-Year 1 Assessment and treatment services
  • Years 2-3 Language/Literacy - Assessment only
  • Year 2 on Stuttering/Fluency - Assessment and treatment
  • Year 2-3 Speech - Assessment and home/school program
  • Year 4 on Speech/Language/Literacy - No service provided.

Note: Contact the Coordinator for Speech Pathology Services for suburbs that are within OPH catchment area.

Adolescent/Adult Voice and Stuttering:

  • All of NMAHS region
  • ENT assessment required prior to voice assessment

Acquired communication/swallowing disorders:

  • All of NMAHS region, or eligible for OPH Day Hospital, Parkinson's Disease or Memory Clinics

Note: OPH does not provide services to people post laryngectomy.

Clinical Education

The Service provides clinical education for undergraduate and post-graduate students who are completing a Human Communication Science degree (or approved equivalent). A Student Manual is available electronically for speech pahtology students who will be attending OPH for a clinical placement.

Work Experience

The Speech Pathology Work Exerience Coordinator (Northern Region) is based at OPH. Limited places are available across the region and interested schools/students should contact the Work Experience Coordinator as early in the year as possible.
